Triggered amplifiers

I have been considering adding more amplifiers to my Russound setup, and I have decided to save on power I want to stick with a triggered solution. I have one used D250LS, which run about $100 on eBay. There are several more of those floating around, but I can't help but think I'd be very happy with a lower cost solution, especially considering some of the lower cost amps available.

I've found Audio Source, but they are fairly expensive as well. Does anyone know of other triggered amps on the market?

Ring Pro Doorbell and Elk 960/930

Has anyone setup a Ring doorbell with an Elk 930 or 960? I've had my regular lighted bell trigger a 960 then a 930 which triggered a song on my Nuvo and its worked great for years. I installed a Ring Pro doorbell and I can't get either to work. It doesn't seem like pressing the button on the Ring opens/closes the circuit or draws a bunch of current. I'm guessing the circuit stays closed all the time and the button press just initiates the WiFi stuff. Anyone play around with this? My other thought was to get a remote chime and maybe be able to tap into the speaker wires or something to indicate activation?

I’ve been holding off upgrading my desktop computer for almost eight years. However, after a few operating system upgrades and countless security updates, my computer can’t even keep up with my modest typing speed.

Even so, I’m considering stripping the software and starting over with a minimal system and a few key applications in hopes of regaining some performance.

So, why go through all that hassle — especially since new desktop computers can be had for a few hundred dollars? Because of the cost of software — and lack of control.

When I purchased my ancient desktop computer, I also purchased a half dozen key software packages on CD-ROM — a word processor, vector drawing program, spreadsheet, and a couple simulation applications.

Granted, the legal jargon on the packages stated that I purchased a license to use the software contained on the discs and there was no warranty of any sort as to its usefulness for any purpose, etc.

Even so, there was the initial cost of the software on CDs, amortized over the life of the computer. In my case, that initial cost was spread out over eight years.

If you’ve moved to a new computer system recently, you’re probably painfully aware of the new software subscription model, in which you pay a monthly or annual fee for a license.

Looking at my core set of six applications, my annual software costs — based on the new subscription model — will come to approximately four times the cost of my computer hardware. That may make for a great profit model for the software companies, but it rubs me the wrong way.

I understand the monthly subscription model for phone connectivity, news feeds, and other services that require a company to continually invest in supporting me. However, the marginal cost for an additional subscriber for the software giants has to be measured in the tenths of a cent.

What concerns me is the future of electronics in general. Years ago, I was among the proponents of the coming wave of software radios and other programmable hardware. Why solder when you can reconfigure a device in software? Well, it all makes sense — unless, of course, every electronic device becomes a subscription service.

In a way, a multi-function smartphone approaches this model, at least to the extent that you need an Internet connection for functionality.

I’m concerned, though, about the evolution of my microcontroller controlled devices. Heck, even my hot air desoldering station could one day require a monthly fee to keep it live on the cloud.

Suddenly, the Internet of Things (IoT) takes on a new meaning — the possibility of a monthly “keep alive” fee for everything — from my smart clothes to my automated thermostat system.

I’m no Luddite, but suddenly, my “real” electronics gadgets and instruments look more appealing. There’s something about the feel of real components — components that I can replace if defective — that leaves me with a feeling of certainty and control. Like my old fashioned tube-type amplifier.

It may not have the Internet connectivity of my iPad and iPhone, but it’s worked just fine for 50+ years. I doubt that anyone will want my iPhone in five years — especially if they have to pay a fee simply to turn it on.

What’s your feeling about “real” electronics vs. the seemingly inevitable wave of electronics through programming?

During a smoke test, DSC smokes wont turn off

I have 2 DSC FSA-10AST smokes.  When testing it with smoke, they both work and the Elk M1 gold panel indicates there is a smoke alarm.  I type in my code and the panel clears but the beeping on the detectors wont stop.  I tried pushing in the button on the detector but nothing worked.  I finally had to turn off the power to the alarm panel.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Help with sanitizing swimming pool water

$

Is there a swimming pool water technician in the house?

I have a 16' x 32' in-ground swimming pool. The water is clear and all of the chemicals are balanced except for one problem. I have a combined chlorine reading of 4 - 5 ppm. I have been maintaining a free chlorine level above ten for a few days now in an attempt to break up the CC but it is not working.

I started out with CC of 7.5 and was able to lower it by adding 4 gallons of 12.5% liquid chlorine and it did lower the CC to about 4.5. Now I don't want to bleach the vinyl liner so I have been adding 2 gallons of liquid at a time and maintaining free chlorine above ten but the CC is staying level at 4.5 for days.

Any help?

Mike.

Hi, I hope I'm simply missing a marking but I don't see on the Elk M1 Gold where the hardware rev is indicated.  Can someone tell me how to determine what it is so I know what updates to apply.  Thanks, Steve

Need help with 4-wire smoke wiring

$

I am working on fixing a 4-wire smoke system that a previously installer screwed up when he installed a new panel at my parent's home. I have a Vista 20P panel, 449CST smokes and a 405-03 reversing relay (the last smoke also has an EOLR built in). The previous installer did not hook up the reversing relay or attach the smokes to a switched power source.

I am trying to figure out how to wire up all of these devices properly.

I originally, purchased a separate power source to power the smoke detectors because the combination of the smoke loop with the other devices will exceed the panel's aux power circuit when in alarm. After looking at the schematic for the reversing relay, however, on alarm the reversing relay switches the power source to pull power from the bell output which is more than enough to power the siren and the smoke detectors. So I assume I no longer need the supplemental power source.

Now my question is 1) will the use of the reversing relay work to disconnect power to the smoke detectors and reset them once the alarm is silenced and the relay switches back to its normal configuration? 2) is there something in this reversing relay that is able to only activate the other smokes when one is in alarm or will all of the smoke activate every time there is an alarm event regardless of whether it is fire or burglary? I thought I read somewhere that this was the case, but cannot find anything in the literature.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Preview of new web based CQC touch screen client

CQC, being Windows based, has a very powerful Windows based touch screen client, the Interface Viewer. It animates touch screens created in our Interface Editor tool. In order to support non-Windows clients we created our RIVA architecture. This works sort of like the X-Windows system in Unix or RDP in Windows, in that the actual IV is running on the CQC server still, but the drawing commands are vectored to the client, and the client sends the server user input information.

Previously two third parties had created RIVA clients for iOS and Android. But, as generally in the case, in the fullness of time, they drifted away and we were left without a good non-Windows solution.

So we have created a new WebRIVA client that runs in a browser, and therefore should be portable, at least to modern browsers. As with all such remoting client schemes, there are some shortcomings, similar to those in RDP. It's very difficult to support things like gestured driven smooth scrolling, so RIVA clients currently don't do that. But, otherwise they allow you to access your CQC user interfaces on non-Windows platforms quite nicely.

A big advantage now is that we control both sides of the equation, so improvements can be made quickly, whereas it was very difficult to make any significant changes before when it required the coordination of third parties. So even just in this first implementation we've made some nice improvements, and more can come in the future.

Here is a little quick and dirty first demo of the new client:

https://youtu.be/0eCT0sLGX74

The interfaces you see in the demo are nothing special. They are just the ones that we can auto-generate for you. But they were also created using our interface designer tool. The auto-generation system just reads those in, updates them based on room configuration you provide, and spits them back up with the updated information. You can create just as nice looking interfaces yourself for your own custom requirements.

Hi all,

I got a keypad, according to the instruction booklet, I'd need a 6 wire cable, but unfortunately the cable guy ran a 4 wire cable, can I still connect the keypad to the controller? sorry for a silly question, since I am learning.

Thanks

PFSense Firewall Group purchase interest

$

Just a post to see about interest relating to a group purchase of a nano itx 4 port mini PC to be utilized for PFSense.

Over the years here have written about using PFSense and DIY building your PFSense box.

minipc.jpg

Depending on interest and numbers I will try to get the device for closer to $100 if possible.

This deal will only be for Cocoontech forum users and only related to PFSense.

I am seeing the prices for almost the same nano itx computers all over the place.

May prewrite the PFSense OS image on the SSD cards in bulk....you will need to configure it and register it on first boot.

Such that the specs would be something like this:

J1900 CPU
RAM: 8Gb
NIC Gb Ports: 4
SSD: 32Gb

Personal extra for me would be a 9 Pin RS-232 serial port which I use for GPS/PPS NTP server plugin for PFSense.  There are others with an RJ-45 serial console port.

Personally wanting the smallest one possible such that I can fit it inside of my Leviton can.

Currently doing my network here a la carte with an

ISP modem (x2 for failover) ==> Firewall  ==> GB managed switch(s) ==>  POE AP (2nd floor balcony ceiling)
